WARNING EXTREMELY GRAPHIC! Catholic Pries Beheaded in Syria by Islamic Terrorists

The Catholic news service quotes local sources who report that the radical Al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra, or Al-Nusra Front, was behind the savage killing. In video posted by Live Leak purporting to show the execution, dozens of men and boys are seen cheering on as three men are seated on the ground awaiting their grisly fate.  The men are methodically beheaded one at a time by men holding what appears to be a simple kitchen knife after which the heads are placed on top of the bodies.

According to Catholic Online, the first victim was Murad.

A frenzy ensues, with dozens drawing out their smartphones to capture the bloody scene, as a chorus of Allahu Akbar ("Allah is the greatest") are sung with jihadi rapture. Several observers are seen moving within inches of the bodies in an effort to capture close-up photos.  Catholic Online is raising alarm that western nations are providing support to the rebels who have shown a proclivity toward persecuting Christians: This should make it clear to Christians around the world what jihadists are about. Make no mistake. Catholics and Christians around the globe are under dire threat, particularly from the spread of militant Islam. Until the threat is recognized and taken seriously, martyrdoms like this will continue.  Vatican Radio reports that Gassanieh, a village with a majority Christian population, had been under attack by Islamist fighters for the past few weeks, forcing most residents to flee for safety.  It quotes Custos of the Holy Land, Franciscan Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa who says, "Unfortunately Syria has now become a battleground not only between Syrian forces, but also between Arab countries and the international community. And those paying the price are the poor, the young and the Christians. That the international community must put a stop to all this".

Pizzaballa told the Vatican News Agency, "The world must know that the support of gunmen by the west is helping extremists in killing Syrians.  "With such stances, not a single Christian will remain in the East," he added.  Vatican Radio writes, "Fr. Mourad was just one of the many men and women religious putting their faith on the front line in Syria, refusing to abandon the communities they serve, Christian and Muslim. They stay because they want to be a sign of hope, light and comfort to people in the midst of destruction."

Texas Lt Governor David Dewhurst: We're passing this bill

In an exclusive Hot Air interview, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst of Texas insists that the attempt to hijack the legislative process by pro-abortion activists this week will not stop the state from passing a limitation on late-term abortions and requirements for clinics to meet the same standards as other ambulatory surgical centers. Dewhurst also says that his office is reviewing the security tapes from the demonstration that derailed the bill at the end of the regular session, and that arrests may be made for inciting a riot -- including perhaps some members of the media

George Zimmerman Trial Update: Key Witness Devastating for Prosecution:

Video - via Fox News. 6/28/2013 - John Good Tesitimony - According to experts who appeared on Fox News earlier this morning, testimony from eye witness John Good in the George Zimmerman murder trial could be "devastating" for the State of Florida's case. Good testified Friday morning that he believes he saw Trayvon Martin on top of Zimmerman, furiously punching the man who is claiming self-defense in the trial. After reviewing highlights from Good's testimony, former federal prosecutor Annemarie McAvoy told Fox's Bill Hemmer, "This is devastating for the prosecution." Because Good described Trayvon Martin is being the consistent aggressor in the encounter, it will make it harder for the state to prove Zimmerman wasn't acting in self-defense. Former New York police sergeant Steve Kardian characterized Zimmerman's position in the description from Good as "virtually indefensible." As discussed during the testimony, Kardian said that Good likely knew about the "ground and pound" position from watching (Mixed Martial Arts) MMA or Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on TV. Noting the importance of Zimmerman's physical capabilities, Kardian said looking at him he sees "a soft man, a soft person, not very tough, not very physical at all." Hemmer asked McAvoy how John Good performed as a witness and she replied, "he was a better witness for the defense than the prosecution," a description that could also be used for Rachel Jeantel.

Supreme Court Decision a Huge Conservative Victory?

Video - Fox News The Five react to today's Supreme Court ruling on Gay Marriage.  Via Mediaite.
Fox News’ The Five waited until its third segment to tackle the two major marriage equality decisions handed down by the Supreme Court today. And in what can perhaps be seen as a sign of the times, none of the primarily conservative hosts had anything too terrible to say about the rulings. AndGreg Gutfeld went so far as to call the decisions a “huge victory” …for conservatives.
Speaking from a legal standpoint, Kimberly Guilfoyle began the conversation by calling this “a very significant day.” She said, “this is the type of two cases that are going to be read years from now in law schools and in legal books across the country.”
Agreeing with Guilfoyle that she’s not “surprised” by the ruling, Dana Perino added, “the bottom line of it is that if you are in favor of gay marriage, you are pleased today. For those that are disappointed in the decision, there are things to look into here that there was a victory of principles over government overreach.” She said the rulings begin “the long road to having gay marriage no longer be a political weapon used by either side. And it gives people a chance to then focus on other important issues that we have in the country.”
Bob Beckel didn’t have quite as hopeful of an outlook, saying that the decision could “ignite a values war in politics.” That being said, he called the court’s decision “almost a libertarian position” in that “they’re saying the government can’t tell you how you’re going to live your lives.”
Next up, Eric Bolling did find a way to tie a criticism of President Obama and his “evolving” stance on gay marriage to the rulings. But he also found some fault in the Supreme Court for making a big decision on DOMA but giving the Prop 8 case back to the lower court.
And finally, Gutfeld made his bold assertion that the day’s news was “a huge conservative victory, because you can no longer deprive someone of an extremely traditional value that makes your life better by curtailing promiscuity and destructive lifestyles.” Opening up a bit about his personal life, Gutfeld added, “Marriage to my wife made me a better man. As a right-winger, I want to impose that belief on others because that’s what right-wingers do.”

The Secret to Happiness:

Best predictors of happiness and unhappiness:
Interesting that a major contributor to being unhappy is a long commute!  What about money?  What about being married??  This article answers them all:
Psychologists armed with statistically significant survey data have a lot of advice on how to be happy, but we don’t seem to be very good at following it.
The daily activity most detracting to people’s happiness is commuting. Individuals self-reporting their enjoyment of daily activities ranked morning commutes dead last. Long commutes also correlate with people bringing the stress of work home with them, as summarized in this Slate article:A survey conducted last year for the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, for instance, found that 40 percent of employees who spend more than 90 minutes getting home from work "experienced worry for much of the previous day." That number falls to 28 percent for those with "negligible" commutes of 10 minutes or less. Workers with very long commutes feel less rested and experience less "enjoyment," as well.
As the article goes on to relate, long commutes also hurt our health. Commuters experience more recurring back and neck pain, sleep and exercise less, and eat more fast food. The same could be said of people working long hours, but the results are stronger for chronic commuters. Worse, commuting robs us of time that could be spent connecting with friends and family. That is particularly problematic as the amount of time spent socializing is consistently ranked as the daily activity most enjoyed by individuals and the strength of relationships highly correlated with happiness.
Nevertheless, the average commute length is growing.
If you’re looking for advice on how to be happy rather than avoid unhappiness, there’s no shortage of psychologists offering advice based on their research. A strong marriage or generally investing in your personal relationships is highly advised - Vaillant, the director of a 76 year old study on Harvard men from the classes of 1942, ‘43, and ‘44, goes so far as to advise, “The only thing that really matters in life are your relationships to other people.
Money improves happiness only to a point, although you can get more happiness per dollarby spending money on experiences instead of possessions, spending on others, and buying many small pleasures instead of a few big ones

SUMMERTIME!

Today is the first FULL DAY OF SUMMER.  A Common Cents tradition is to welcome Summer with this awesome Kenny Chesney song - Summertime:

Kenny Chesney's "Summertime"
"Summertime"

Summertime is finally here
That old ballpark, man, is back in gear
Out on 49
Man I can see the lights

School's out and the nights roll in
Man, just like a long lost friend
You ain't seen in a while
And can't help but smile

And it's two bare feet on the dashboard
Young love and an old Ford
Cheap shades and a tattoo
And a Yoo-Hoo bottle on the floorboard

Perfect song on the radio
Sing along 'cause it's one we know
It's a smile, it's a kiss
It's a sip of wine, it's summertime
Sweet summertime

Temperature says 93
Down at the Deposit and Guarantee
But that swimmin' hole
It's nice and cold

Bikini bottoms underneath
But the boys' hearts still skip a beat
When them girls shimmy off
Them old cutoffs

And it's two bare feet on the dashboard
Young love and an old Ford
Cheap shades and a tattoo
And a Yoo-Hoo bottle on the floorboard

Perfect song on the radio
Sing along 'cause it's one we know
It's a smile, it's a kiss
It's a sip of wine, it's summertime
Sweet summertime

The more things change
The more they stay the same
Don't matter how old you are
When you know what I'm talkin' 'bout
Yeah baby when you got

Two bare feet on the dashboard
Young love and an old Ford
Cheap shades and a tattoo
And a Yoo-Hoo bottle rollin' on the floorboard

Perfect song on the radio
Sing along 'cause it's one we know
It's a smile, it's a kiss
It's a sip of wine, it's summertime
Sweet summertime Perfect Song on the Radio
Sing along 'cause it's one we know
It's a song - it's a kiss it's Summertime!

9,486 Non-answers:

Yahoo came out with an interactive guide showing the top 9,486 ways Jay Carney won’t answer your questions (interactive).
Jay Carney doesn’t have an answer for that. He hasn’t discussed that subject with the president. He will refer you to the Department of [insert agency here]. He refuses to speculate on that. He’ll have to get back to you.
But he appreciates the question.
A Yahoo News analysis of the 444 briefings that Carney has held since becoming White House press secretary has identified 13 distinct strains in the way he dodges a reporter's question. Since Carney held his first daily briefing with reporters in the White House Brady Press Briefing Room on Feb. 16, 2011, for example, he’s used some variation of "I don’t have the answer" more than 1,900 times. In 1,383 cases he referred a question to someone else. But will he at least speculate on hypotheticals? No. In fact, he has refused to do so 525 times.

Edward Snowden Q&A - Questions and Answers

Edward Snowden sat down with The Guardian for an extended Question & Answer (Q&A) session that was opened up to an Internet Audience.  Excerpts of his Q&A:

Question:

User avatar for GlennGreenwald Guardian staff
Let's begin with these:
1) Why did you choose Hong Kong to go to and then tell them about US hacking on their research facilities and universities?
2) How many sets of the documents you disclosed did you make, and how many different people have them? If anything happens to you, do they still exist?
Answer:
1) First, the US Government, just as they did with other whistleblowers, immediately and predictably destroyed any possibility of a fair trial at home, openly declaring me guilty of treason and that the disclosure of secret, criminal, and even unconstitutional acts is an unforgivable crime. That's not justice, and it would be foolish to volunteer yourself to it if you can do more good outside of prison than in it.
Second, let's be clear: I did not reveal any US operations against legitimate military targets. I pointed out where the NSA has hacked civilian infrastructure such as universities, hospitals, and private businesses because it is dangerous. These nakedly, aggressively criminal acts are wrong no matter the target. Not only that, when NSA makes a technical mistake during an exploitation operation, critical systems crash. Congress hasn't declared war on the countries - the majority of them are our allies - but without asking for public permission, NSA is running network operations against them that affect millions of innocent people. And for what? So we can have secret access to a computer in a country we're not even fighting? So we can potentially reveal a potential terrorist with the potential to kill fewer Americans than our own Police? No, the public needs to know the kinds of things a government does in its name, or the "consent of the governed" is meaningless.
2) All I can say right now is the US Government is not going to be able to cover this up by jailing or murdering me. Truth is coming, and it cannot be stopped.

Question:

User avatar for ewenmacaskill Guardian staff
I should have asked you this when I saw you but never got round to it........Why did you just not fly direct to Iceland if that is your preferred country for asylum?
Answer:
Leaving the US was an incredible risk, as NSA employees must declare their foreign travel 30 days in advance and are monitored. There was a distinct possibility I would be interdicted en route, so I had to travel with no advance booking to a country with the cultural and legal framework to allow me to work without being immediately detained. Hong Kong provided that. Iceland could be pushed harder, quicker, before the public could have a chance to make their feelings known, and I would not put that past the current US administration.
Question:

You have said HERE that you admire both Ellsberg and Manning, but have argued that there is one important distinction between yourself and the army private...

"I carefully evaluated every single document I disclosed to ensure that each was legitimately in the public interest," he said. "There are all sorts of documents that would have made a big impact that I didn't turn over, because harming people isn't my goal. Transparency is."
Are you suggesting that Manning indiscriminately dumped secrets into the hands of Wikileaks and that he intended to harm people?
Answer:
No, I'm not. Wikileaks is a legitimate journalistic outlet and they carefully redacted all of their releases in accordance with a judgment of public interest. The unredacted release of cables was due to the failure of a partner journalist to control a passphrase. However, I understand that many media outlets used the argument that "documents were dumped" to smear Manning, and want to make it clear that it is not a valid assertion here.
Question:

Did you lie about your salary? What is the issue there? Why did you tell Glenn Greenwald that your salary was $200,000 a year, when it was only $122,000 (according to the firm that fired you.)
Answer:
I was debriefed by Glenn and his peers over a number of days, and not all of those conversations were recorded. The statement I made about earnings was that $200,000 was my "career high" salary. I had to take pay cuts in the course of pursuing specific work. Booz was not the most I've been paid.
Question:

Why did you wait to release the documents if you said you wanted to tell the world about the NSA programs since before Obama became president?
Answer:
Obama's campaign promises and election gave me faith that he would lead us toward fixing the problems he outlined in his quest for votes. Many Americans felt similarly. Unfortunately, shortly after assuming power, he closed the door on investigating systemic violations of law, deepened and expanded several abusive programs, and refused to spend the political capital to end the kind of human rights violations like we see in Guantanamo, where men still sit without charge.

Question:

1) Define in as much detail as you can what "direct access" means.
2) Can analysts listen to content of domestic calls without a warrant?
Answer:
1) More detail on how direct NSA's accesses are is coming, but in general, the reality is this: if an NSA, FBI, CIA, DIA, etc analyst has access to query raw SIGINT databases, they can enter and get results for anything they want. Phone number, email, user id, cell phone handset id (IMEI), and so on - it's all the same. The restrictions against this are policy based, not technically based, and can change at any time. Additionally, audits are cursory, incomplete, and easily fooled by fake justifications. For at least GCHQ, the number of audited queries is only 5% of those performed.

Edward Snowden just gave a new update to The Guardian.  In it he revealed much more than was every know about the NSA Spying Program including that during the London G20 summit meetings in 2009 the NSA:
• Setting up internet cafes where they used an email interception programme and key-logging software to spy on delegates' use of computers;
• Penetrating the security on delegates' BlackBerrys to monitor their email messages and phone calls;
• Supplying 45 analysts with a live round-the-clock summary of who was phoning who at the summit;

In Defense of Fathers and Fatherhood:

Happy Father's Day. It shouldn't be controversial at all but a simple Google search found this site which explores the financial, medicinal and even career benefits of being a father.  Pass it on!
Your Personal Health Improves. Research shows that the structure that comes into a man's life because of fatherhood helps him make better choices. Having a family to come home to and be responsible for helps fathers choose a healthier lifestyle.
Your Activity Level Increases. Getting up at night, playing with the kids, walking at the park – all these kinds of work and play make dad more active and thus feeling better about himself.
It Reduces Stress Related Ailments. The National Institute of Mental Health found that men who are in healthy family relationships are less likely to have stress-related health problems. Issues like chronic pain, insomnia, stomach problems and fatigue are less problematic for stable fathers than for other male subsets of the population.
Your Nurturing Side is Enhanced. So often, we see boys and young men being pretty self-focused and self-absorbed. The Minnesota Fatherhood Initiative found that men who succeeded as fathers became less inward-focused and developed a greater ability to nurture and care for others. And not just for their children, but for their spouses, friends and coworkers.
You Have a Lower Risk for Clinical Depression. Men who live alone have a much higher risk of depression and suicide than married men with children.
Your Job Satisfaction Improves. This may be a little counter-intuitive, but research shows that committed fathers feel more comfortable in their occupation and feel that they perform well at work more often than men who are not fathers.
You Will Cope Better With Daily Life. Men who are fathers tend to have better coping skillswith stress in all areas of life, not just at home.
Your Children Will Learn Better. The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study has found that the children of responsible and involved fathers learned life skills faster and better than children without an involved father in their lives. And a study of children in Barbados born to adolescent mothers found that children with an involved father had much better grades than other children.
Your Sex Life Will Improve. Again, this may seem a little strange to new fathers, but the research is clear. Committed fathers married to their children's mother have more and better sex than men not in such a family relationship.
Your Personal Freedom is Enhanced. Research shows that committed fathers are less likely to have encounters with the criminal justice system, fewer hospital admissions, fewer accidental and premature deaths and a decreased risk of substance abuse.
There's more.  Here a a bunch of benefits to the children of having a father in their life:
  • babies as young as three months old can tell the difference between their mother and father. They can tell by the way each speaks to them, holds them, and by their different smells.
  • research has shown that children whose fathers are involved in rearing them score higher on cognitive tests (they seem smarter) than those with relatively uninvolved fathers.
  • improved cognitive abilities are associated with higher educational achievement. In fact, fathers who are involved in their children's schools and academic achievement, regardless of their own educational level, are increasing the chances their child will graduate from high school, perhaps go to vocational school, or even to college.
  • a father's involvement in children's school activities protects at-risk children from failing or dropping out
  • research shows that fathers who are more involved with their children tend to raise children who experience more success in their career. Career success can lead to greater income and greater financial stability.
  • involved fathering is related to lower rates of teen violence, delinquency, and other problems with the law.
  • father involvement is associated with positive child characteristics such as empathy, self-esteem, self-control, psychological well-being, social competence, and life skills.
  • children who grow up in homes with involved fathers are more likely to take an active and positive role in raising their own families. For example, fathers who recall a secure, loving relationship with both parents were more involved in the lives of their infants and more supportive to their wives.
